Morin, Paul

Paul Morin is a native of Causapscal in the Valley de la Matapédia and practices sculpture at Saint-Jean-Port-Joli for more than 40 years. He has to his credit several achievements and demonstrations at festivals and events across Canada.

Paul Morin made his first sculptures in 1967-68 in... New Brunswick, where he was residing in a school. It is a brother who owned a sculpture workshop who introduced him to the art. It is this same brother who, through articles of newspapers, made him discover St-Jean-Port-Joli, the capital of wood carving. Returning home, the young Paul simply warned his parents that his idea was made: he would sculpt in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli!

Woodcarver in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli for more than 40 years, Paul Morin has discovered a new medium (sea ivory) through André Senécal of Cap-Saint-Ignace: "André phoned me to ask me if I could try to mix wood and bones of sturgeon. '' I tried the experience and I liked the result" explains Mr. Morin that produces beautiful flowers whose petals are made of sea ivory and the stem and base carved in wood.

He intervenes the least possible in his work "to highlight what the nature" added. Thus, the bones of sturgeon remain virtually intact.

The Department of biology at Laval University testified that the bones of sturgeon should be considered as ivory from sea.

Mr. Morin sculpts for more than 40 years and intends to continue to do so!
